Nine dedicated transport corridors are being established to reinforce the railfreight network in Europe. Two of these corridors run through Austria and they were officially inaugurated yesterday (23 February).
The new southern route, a diagonal link from Poland in northern Europe to Italy and Slovenia in the south, represents a new edition of an old trade route between the Baltic and the Adriatic Seas.
The Baltic-Adriatic corridor has a direct link to the port of Koper, the most important port for freight traffic in Austria. Some two thirds of all goods are loaded onto trains at the Slovenian port.
